Fishing with Shimano Surf, Rock and General Purpose Rods
The surf and the rocks offer spectacular fisheries in Australia. These locations, however, are the most punishing on your fishing rods. Often you are casting huge weights and long distances. Often you end up scull dragging your catch against the wave action, over rocks and through the sucking wet sand.
You also use your rod to pull big fish up onto the rock platform you’re fishing. This puts immense strain on your rod and its components. Shimano Surf, Rock and General-Purpose Rods are not only better positioned to tackle the challenge, but they also offer impressive overall performance.
Australia is blessed with many thousands of kilometres of coastline, littered with untouched beaches and rocks, with many of them possibly never been fished before. Discover these places with Shimano Surf, Rock or General-Purpose Rods, and fish with perfection.

Buyers Guide on Shimano Beach, Rock and GP Rods
Not sure what to purchase? Then have a quick read of our handy guide we have put together.
Size: 8ft Shimano Rods – are generally suited to general purpose fishing. They’re not too long and not terribly short making them ideal for the rocks or beach where long distances are not too important, and they will also fish comfortably in basic river, pier and break wall fishing scenarios.
Size: 9ft Shimano Rods – Shimano produces a select range of shore spin rods that equate to being around 9ft in length. These fishing rods are perfect for spinning lures from the rocks, fishing light baits off the beach or break walls and for casting longer distances in lakes and rivers.
Size: 10ft Shimano Rods - If you are looking for the ideal cross between a surf rod and a rock fishing rod then 10ft is generally the best. Not all beaches across Australia command the use of a longer rod but for those beaches that get a bit of wash and swell longer is better but if you also love your rock fishing you need a little versatility, and that’s where a 10ft rod comes into play as the ideal choice of size.
Size 12ft Shimano Rods – is the rod length you need for better ability at casting past the breakers on the beach. 12ft rods make ideal surf fishing allrounders to target anything from whiting through to salmon, tailor and mulloway.
Sizes Other – We also sell a few other size ranges in the surf, rock and general purpose category of fishing rods and these include coastline light rods which are 10ft 6 inches in length and make brilliant light surf rods for targeting whiting, bream and flathead on a 4000-5000 sized reel. You’ll also find that we stock several options beyond 12ft in length for those anglers where distance is super important.
Shimano Revolution Coastal spin Rods are a range specifically designed for the surf and Rocks; they are also ideal for chasing big fish from Jetties and break walls. Shimano Aerowave Surf and Rock Fishing Rods are available in multiple size and construction options. Rated to 8-15kg, you have all the power you need, with the option of casting lures up to 150 grams.
