Buyers Guide - Fishing with Shimano Light and Medium Rods
Lakes, rivers, dams and creeks. Estuaries, rock walls, break walls and beaches. The inshore fishing waters offer a lifetime of fishing exploration and rewards, and the Shimano Light-Medium Inshore Fishing Rods
take you there with confidence.
Below we’re covering a few of Australias top light-medium target fish species. Take a quick read through this handy buying guide to assist you in making the right purchase decision.
Shimano Bream Fishing Rod – Bream are usually found on beaches, around rocks, in estuaries, lagoons, harbours and lakes throughout Australia and are one of the top targeted table and competition fish especially along the east coast of Australia.
In our range of rods for sale, we have several options to choose from, and there are even some dedicated models such as the Raider bream rod.
On a general note though what you will ideally be looking for is a fishing rod in our range with a rating of anywhere within the 1-5kg class. Our most popular are those that are specifically rated 2-4kg. Once you have picked your Shimano Bream Fishing Rod, we suggest matching it to a 1000-2500 sized spin reel.
Shimano Australian Bass Rods – When it comes to looking for a rod for Australian bass it is near identical to that of bream. However, one big difference is that full attention should be paid to the size of the rod. 6-7ft is ideal.
You don’t want to go past 7ft as generally the places you will be fishing is going to be tight snaggy country and fishing with a rod at even 6-7ft in size can still be challenging at times with short tight casts needed amongst the trees and shrubbery.
Shimano Redfin and yellowbelly perch rods – We have rods for sale to cater to those that target redfin and yellowbelly as well. Again, following the same lines as bream and bass a rod rated 2-5kg or thereabouts will be ideal and around 7ft in length.
If you’re explicitly targeting big yella’s you could always beef it up a little but generally 2-5kg rod range is enough.
Shimano Trout Fishing Rod – Trout is one of Australia’s best known and highly sort after freshwater fish.
Rod length ideally sits around 6-7ft, and line class generally will depend on a few factors, a 1-3kg rating is perfect for catching smaller sized stream trout and for casting super light lures. Though, if casting out divers and heaver soft plastics, we suggest stepping up the rod rating up to around max 5kg.
A 2-4kg rated rod like our suggestions for bream will be ideal, but another handy hint is to check the weight of the lures you will be casting. Most of the rods we sell will have approximate cast weight recommendations within their features and specs section on the listing.
A 2500 sized reel is best but if fishing light and finesse you can always step it down to a 1000 sized reel.
Shimano Flathead Fishing Rod - Back to saltwater, flathead must be at the top of the list for the most targeted saltwater fish across the continent. They’re found in lakes, rivers and offshore and range in size from pan size to over a metre in length.
Flathead fish is a highly targeted species on both baits and lures, especially soft plastics.
In our range of rods for sale, look for a rod that has a rating up to 5kg for fishing inshore but if fishing offshore it pays to step it up a bit with a rod rated 5kg-10kg+. The two main reasons for stepping it up is an allowance for use with heavier weights, and just in case something larger comes along like a big snapper.
In the estuaries If you pick any rod rated around 2-5kg in class we suggest pairing it with a 2500-3000 sized reel and for offshore on a slightly heavier rod, a 4000-5000 size for extra capacity to fish deeper water.
Shimano Barramundi Rods – In our range for sale we also sell rods suitable for targeting the prized Barra.
We have both spin and baitcaster rod options available for purchase in the 5kg+ mark through to barra rods rated to around 10kg.
While spin is fashionable; nothing quite beats a baitcaster rod and reel setup.
A Barramundi is renowned for lurking in the snags and generally if you don’t cast right into the snags and work your lures back you limit yourself substantially. Baitcasters, therefore, offer much more accurate casting for this purpose.
Granted Baitcasters they take a bit of getting used to, but once you master the art of baitcaster fishing it’s hard to use anything else, and you will understand why when you lose count of how many barras you’ve caught.
Everything else, Lakes, rivers light-medium – With so many different fish species in our waterways we have kept this guide to a minimum by providing a short brief on the most common fish species. However, in summary, the rods we sell in this Shimano rod range are suited for light to medium fishing applications such as fishing in rivers, bays, lakes, and inlets.
If you are after a rod for a specific species that we haven’t mentioned or need a little further advice we are only an email or phone call away.
