Should you buy glass sunglasses or polycarbonate
Glass: When you choose to invest in glass you invest in the best money can buy the price reflects in what these sunglasses are capable of. Clarity is second to none against polycarbonate and they are much more resistant to scratching.
Polycarbonate: Whist glass is best there are benefits to owning polycarbonate lens sunnies too, firstly the price is less abrasive on your wallet since they are much more affordable, but the main benefit is that they are light weight and much more resistant to impact breakage compared to that of glass.
Mako Polarised Eyewear Lens Types
When it comes to the time of deciding which lens to purchase there are some elements to consider. Below we will detail a bit more about the main 4 lens colour choices that may assist you in which lens to buy when you are ready to purchase your pair of Mako polarised sunglasses.
Grey Lens – is the darkest lens available. Grey assists in cutting down the most light, they are a general purpose lens, they generally don’t enhance colours but because they cut down light hard it makes them a perfect choice for extreme light conditions such as offshore fishing, driving where there is a lot of glare from the road and buildings etc. Grey lens models are also ideal for any other outdoor sport activities or events. Whilst less light means a little less detail grey is the most comfortable pick for most people since it doesn’t distort colour at all making grey a soothing and easy to wear colour.
Copper Lens- is at the other end of the spectrum to grey. Whist grey is general purpose and doesn’t enhance, the copper lens is a highlighting lens. It’s a lens that sight fishing anglers prefer as it provides the brightest vision which enhances objects within your field of view giving the maximum amount of detail. Copper will reduce glare by the exact amount as grey, but copper will enhance the difference between certain colours translating to improved contrast. Ideal for anglers fishing sand flats and other scenarios and even in the shadows where in lower light situations grey would be too dark to wear. Copper lenses are ideal for several other activities including driving.
Rose Lens - Is not as bright as a copper lens but is still classified as a highlighting lens. Some people may find the copper a little too bright and the rose fits nicely as the best alternative. It remains a lens that is perfect for sight fishing, it offers superb contrast ability but is not as in your face as copper which makes it also ideal for driving and general purpose wear a combination of both sight and water penetration is required.
Brown Lens – Is a nice comfortable colour lens to wear, it does have minimal colour distortion but offers excellent colour contrast enhancing. Brown is heading more towards the properties and spectrum of a grey lens though a little brighter making it a great in-between lens. Brown is an ideal all-rounder lens for fishing, camping, driving and any other outdoor activity.
Other lens options – Whilst the above are the main 4 types of lens colours that Mako produce there is also a couple of variations in these colour options such as the GOH2 code model / grey red mirror which still forms all the properties of grey but is a little lighter, its still a great all-round comfortable lens just that the light transmission is a little different offering extra detail resulting from the extra light into your pupils. Copper also comes in a few variations such as copper silver mirror, again possessing the main features we discussed in copper, just with some slight variations in the lens.
Mako Lens Technology
High Definition – enhances clarity through the reduction of certain wavelengths of lighting that cause distortion. The best way to describe it is to say that it is like you comparing the clarity difference between the old standard definition box tv to new digital HD TV. High definition polarised sunnies deliver clearer, crisper vision and assists in reducing eye strain throughout the course of the day. HD is currently only available in glass lens models at this stage and is signified by the letter H in the lens code. In other words, when you head to each individual listing on our website you will come to a drop down order menu near the add to cart button. In this menu there could be a code like G1HR6 as example, the letter H in that code will clarify that it is indeed a model that incorporates the special HD filter.
Infra Red Filter – Helps to increase comfort by reducing heat transference between the lens and your eyes. This filter assists to reduce dry and itchy eyes. Again, only presently available in Glass lens models and is signified by the letter R in the product model code.
Photochromic Explained - Some of the lenses in Mako possess photochromic properties, research this by reading each product listing in our range but to explain what photochromic lenses do, they change tint in response to light levels. The lenses will darken when exposed to increased light and lighten when there is less light. Mako Photochromic lenses are ideal for when outdoors and you expect many lighting fluctuations such as in sun/shade, cloud/no cloud situations.
Oleophobic Explained – All Mako Sunglasses come with a coating called oleophobic. This is a treatment applied to the surface of the lens which helps to repel elements such as oils, water and dust. The benefits of the oleophobic coating are that the sunnies are easier to clean and more resilient to scratching.
Hydrophobic Explained – Mako Eyewear also come with a hydrophobic coating that is also applied to the outer lens layer and helps water to bead and run off the lens. If you have ever driven a car that has had a special rain repellent applied to the window, this is basically the same principal.
