Circle Hooks Make Good Fishing Sense
The team at the fishing tackle shop are strong advocates for protecting our much loved Aussie fish species. The circle hook design has gone a long way to ensuring the fish you have just released lives to breed and fight another day.
Just remember, the circle hook requires a slight technique adjustment that, in short, is as simple as not striking the fish to set the hook. The design of the circle is such that the fish set the hook themselves in the corner of the mouth. This hooking technique eliminates gut hooking, which is often detrimental to the fish. Studies have shown that most fish which are gut hooked have a restricted chance of survival compared to fish that are mouth caught.
Circle fishing hooks work exceptionally effectively, in both freshwater or saltwater scenarios and millions of anglers have discovered the multiple benefits of circles, with vast numbers of fisherman now using them exclusively.
While the majority of the staff here at fishing tackle shop are generally luring anglers, there are times we go back to basics and fish with bait, especially when fishing for jew from our local rivers and beaches or for snapper out wide on our local reefs. Our team too, is hooked on using circles. They’re fantastic for both live bait and dead baits.
It’s good to see that some tournaments now restrict the use of J style fishing hooks and permit only circles. We applaud the rule-makers of such competitions. Most catches in tournaments are catch and release these days, so it is imperative sport anglers ensure that released fish go back in the best possible condition.
Size Guide
We have multiple sizes for sale in our online store, and you will find most of our listings have a bit of a blurb on sizes and offer some level of technical information. However, we thought we would put together a little summary for this category page to save you sifting through the many listings.
We’re here to help don’t forget; you can call us on the phone during ordinary Australian business hours or send us an email with your questions.
Popular sizes for estuary: #2, 1 or 1/0 are our best selling sizes. Baits that work exceptionally well with circles include worms, nippers, poddy mullet or whitebait.
There are various rigging techniques which you may use but one tip we find works well when rigging whitebait, in particular, is to feed the circle hook through the eye of the bait, turn the hook and run it through the body so that the point comes through and is fully exposed. This system we find works amazingly for catching flathead.
If fishing for bream, the same sizing principle applies; however, some anglers prefer to fish smaller and as such will buy and use circle hooks in sizes 4 or 6.
On the other end of the spectrum we discuss barramundi. Barra have big mouths, so its best to use a larger size circle. Generally a 6/0 to 7/0 is ideal but don’t be afraid to go a little bigger. Barra love cherabin shrimp or small baitfish and circle hooks work well with such temptations. You may similarly encounter queenfish, golden snapper and threadfin salmon as a welcome bycatch.
Popular sizes for offshore reef fishing: Typically anglers are purchasing sizes between 4/0 to 8/0 for offshore angling. These sizes generally all work well for a vast range of reef-dwelling fish like snapper, morwong and even jew. We suggest taking a closer look at our Gamakatsu octopus circle hooks range for sale. We’re finding this particular model is accounting for a fair chunk of our sales.
Heavy Duty Circles for marlin, sailfish and other gamefish: We stock a range of larger style circles for sale. Browse our tuna circle range and owner range. Some of these listings have large sizes up to 15/0.
Freshwater or saltwater, it doesn’t matter where you go fishing, if you’re not already an avid fan, as so many of our customers already are, then it’s time to discover the circle hook advantage.
