Soft Surfboards - Choosing A Foamie Surfboard for Kids and Adults
Soft surfboards for kids & adults
Surfing is a sport for all ages. It is never too early or too late to pick it up – as long as you’re able to stand on your own two feet – but, to make the learning process more enjoyable and progress quickly, you must choose your first surfboard carefully.
Whether you’re a kid excited to hit the waves or an adult who has finally decided to give surfing a try, a soft top surfboard – also known as a foamie surfboard – is the optimal choice.
Why a soft surfboard?
The first reason why soft boards are the best choice for beginners is safety, for you as well as for the other people in the water. Soft surfboards are generally made of EPS or otherwise known as expanded polystyrene foam which is a form of foam that is thermoplastic light weight durable foam that is not only lightweight, but offers impressive shock absorbing abilities. To complement the EPS core in the soft surfboards they are commonly finished off with an XPE deck which is a polyethylene materiel most commonly seen on a lot of body board decks. XPE offers comfort and assists in providing extra shock absorption as well as increased buoyancy which is ideal for beginner surfers.
Using a soft surf board highly diminishes the risk of injury in case of wipe out. The softness and roundness of the foamie also make it safer for other surfers and beach goers too, in case the board gets loose or you have a collision.
Foam surfboards are more buoyant and have a curvier rocker than regular boards, which makes it easier for a grommet to catch waves. Also, foamies are usually wider, for enhanced stability and balance.
Choosing the right size of a foam surfboard
There is no strict, universal rule regarding the adequate size of a foam surfboard. Generally, a soft top surfboard must be chosen taking into account the age and weight of the surfer – height doesn’t really matter as much. Surfboards for kids usually go in the 4 to 6 foot-long range, up to 7 feet for older children. While many companies also produce shorter soft boards, you should know that a longer and wider foam board makes for easier wave catching and more rapid learning.
Although they are generally considered surfboards for kids, as an adult you can also use foam surfboards for your initiation in surfing. The typical length to search for when picking your first soft board is usually in the 7 to 9-foot interval, as they need more top surface to maintain balance you can opt for shorter soft surfboards as your skills increase.
Soft surfboards are a great way to learn to surf, and you can’t go wrong with them. Just pick yours, and you’re ready to hit the waves.
